More About Anne Flavia's first months
These pictures were made after we moved to Buffalo. We lived in an apartment near the campus for a few months and then we moved to the country. We house-sat for a professor who was on Sabbatical for that semester. The farm was beautiful, with a big barn. It was near Lockport, New York, on the Erie Canal.
We had neighbors across the street who had never been more than 25 miles from home. They were farmers. The place was beautiful but very cold.

a Christmas letter from 1960 by Patsy Reese
75 Janice St., Apt. 79
Buffalo 7, New York
December 12, 1960
Merry Christmas, Everybody!
We are all well and expect a white Christmas up here.
Anne Flavia is 2-1/2 now; she makes small decisions, long sentences, and peanut butter sandwiches for herself and Kitty, who came to live with us in September.
Bill is 6 months old Dec. 28 and at about 17 pounds is beautifully co-ordinated. He is constantly on the move, and his curiosity is matched only by his ambition.
Hayne is well-liked at the University of Buffalo….too busy is you ask me but he enjoys the work, especially his research. We plan a long trip home this summer with stops at almost every relative's house and a couple of weeks in Mexico, baby-sitting compliments of Ann and Thurston Atwood.
I haven't taken any course yet, but have joined a group to play chamber music once a week (amateurs) and I'm librarian on the board of La Leche League, a group for breast-feeding education. They helped me a lot before Bill was born (he's still nursing) and I enjoy helping them.
Here's hoping we get to see all of you this summer and that you have a great New Year!
Love,
Patsy

a letter from Thurston to Patsy Atwood Reese April 1958
Band Hall
April 2, 1958
Well spring has come; and I don't guess I have to mention that this is my favorite time of year. My fancy is turned in different directions than it used to be….but it still turns, which is something.
The fishing bug is really about to get the best of me,,,,Bob, Bill and I went out last Sunday…but too much wind kept us from fishing very long.
Thanks for the socks…I guess that you are about the only one who ha ever knitted me anything. I am going to save them and wear them next football season. I tried them out the other day..and I like the way my feet feel..I know they will be warm.
I think of you kids a lot…and wish I could share some of the happiness being around you. But I know that it is re a l fine for you both to be so far away from the influences of parents.
…I will enclose a check for five for just being an expectant grandpa. My gosh..it better be a girl. So get something colored that will suit a girl.
Thanks for the pictures you're gonna take. …
73's and 88's (that's ham talk for hugs and kisses)
Doc.
(Doc was Thurston's amateur radio "handle." Amateur radio operators call themselves "hams." Daddy and Uncle Ed both spent a lot of time with their "ham rigs" in the late 1950's.)
when I find the photo of TR with his ham rig I will add it to this post.

Anne, Bill and Margaret in Door County
When Hayne married Nancy Mann a few months after the divorce, they got a summer place in Door County, Wisconsin. The kids would go there in the summer for a week or so to visit. I got lots of funny letters from them and some real good photos, some of which I haven't found yet. But here are three that I am pretty sure were made there.

a letter from Granny Reese 1957

Mrs. Reese was a considerate and loving mother-in-law whose memory I will always treasure.
Dallas, Tx. Sept 26, 1957
Patsy, Dear:
We got to Dallas last night about six. We stopped off in Grandview to see Tom F's 94 year old aunt Ola. She is remarkable..can get out of bed and sit in a wheel chair.
Then we went to Martin City to see a cousin Tom F. hadn't seen in 45 years. He visited Aunt Ola when he was twelve years old and hasn't seen the cousins since. We went down through Carthage to see another cousin Henry, and they have your house…a huge white frame with great big living room, sun porch (with marble floor) breakfast room, kitchen and glassed in back . Downstairs four bedrooms, a sleeping porch and 2 bathrooms with marble floors and walls half way up.
Their only daughter got married June 14th, and she and her husband are in Yale U. and their son is married and lives in New York.
The trip back was pleasant..cool weather…it had rained last week.
The enclosed bills are for you..put them aside till you get homesick, then go to the show, get haircut, or something. I'm sure that you have already got the apartment all arranged the way you were working. I hope you didn't wear yourself out. We are so happy that Hayne has someone of his own with him. He must have gotten pretty lonesome sometimes. With your nice personality you will soon make lots of friends. I hope there are some nice couples in the apartment (building)
Did you get the TV to work? I hope so they have some good programs.
If you think of anything vital you need, let me know. Idon't remember seeing any pillows in the apartment. I''m sure you will arrange things over a few times till you get them to osuit you. It's all fun, and here's "good housekeeping" to you. Make Hayne help….
Love, Marion
P. S. I'm sending some thread, needles, etc. The recipes are good if you have someone over. They are nota very expensive.

The front porch at 208 Winspear, fall 1961
We were sitting on the front porch of our house in Winspear, on the Buffalo University campus. The lady on the left is Charlotte, Claflin. She was a friend of ours and Bill's godmother when he was christened. In the first picture you see Hayne with Bill next to him and Anne next to Miss Claflin.
Hayne took the second picture so I am in it. I was obviously pregnant with Margaret Ellen Reese who was born January 30, 1962.

Along came Bill Reese
Bill was named William Hayne Waring Reese after my brother and Hayne his dad. He was born on June 28, 1960 in Buffalo, New York. We lived at that time in an upstairs apartment near the park and the Buffalo Zoo.

Anne Flavia's first year

Anne was taking her first steps in this picture. She was about 9 months old. Mother was visiting at the time, and what a good time we had!
Below is obviously her first birthday cake.
I am sure it was homemade; in those days I cooked for our family and would never have brought home a ready-made cake for her...

The Reese clan in Dallas
Hayne's family lived at 6665 Lakewood Blvd. in Dallas. Their house was built in the 1920's I believe. It was two-story, with a fireplace in the living room and a butler's pantry between the kitchen and the dining room. There was a sun porch where Marian Reese put the tree at Christmas. Sometimes she made a playground for all the grandchildren by taking the sofa cushions off the sofa and putting them on the floor so they could climb in and out of the sofa all day.
Here is a short slide show of photos Hayne made in the mid 1950's. The children in the slide show are children of Hayne's sister, Marian Lou, and her husband, Percy Leucke.
