The border printed on this picture is very interesting. It looks like Thurston in jodphurs and boots. In my life with him (I was born when he was 23) I never saw him wear boots, ever.
Thurston had to miss a lot of school, especially after Manning died when Thurston was 15. So when he finally got his high school diploma, it was 1934 and he was 20 years old. The building behind him in this photo is Comanche High School.
Later in 1952 he would become a teacher at this same school, where he taught band and American history.
One of the ways he raised money was to take pictures and develop them himself to sell to senior class -mates, who made scrapbooks for themselves, since at that time nobody could afford yearbooks.
